The Sacred Shakti Peeth in the Clouds

Surkanda Devi Temple, perched on the high ridges of the Tehri Garhwal region, is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths in India. At an elevation of 2,757 meters, it attracts both spiritual seekers and nature lovers. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and holds deep mythological significance, as it is believed to be the spot where the head of Sati, Lord Shiva’s consort, fell during his cosmic dance of destruction.

Beyond religious importance, the temple offers a surreal panorama of the surrounding Himalayan range. On a clear day, one can witness snow-capped peaks stretching across the skyline. It’s an incredible fusion of divinity and natural beauty that feels almost otherworldly.

The 1.5 km trek from Kaddukhal is a major highlight. This scenic trail is enveloped by dense forests of oak and deodar, and during spring, it turns vibrant with blooming rhododendrons. The trek is gentle and well-paved, making it ideal for families and casual hikers. Local vendors along the trail sell herbal teas, wooden handicrafts, and offer stories passed down through generations.

Legend has it that the temple has existed since ancient times, though the current structure has seen several reconstructions. A major festival celebrated here is the Ganga Dussehra, where devotees from nearby villages and cities come together in colorful processions, chanting hymns and offering prayers to the goddess.

From Ukroots Resort, the temple is easily accessible — just a 15-minute drive to the base followed by the trek. If you're coming from Mussoorie, expect a 1-hour drive via Dhanaulti. The best months to visit are April to June and September to November when the skies are clear and the surroundings lush.
