Legacy & Establishment

The Indian Military Academy, or IMA, was established in **1932** during British rule, initially known as the Royal Indian Military College. It has since grown into one of the most prestigious military academies in the world, producing thousands of brave officers for the Indian Army and other allied forces.

The iconic **Chetwode Building**, with its red-brick colonial architecture, serves as the spiritual and operational center of the campus.

IMA Motto – “Veerta Aur Vivek”

The academy lives by the motto “**Veerta aur Vivek**” (Valour and Wisdom). Every cadet who passes through IMA’s gates carries this spirit into their service life. The **Chetwode Credo**, engraved at the entrance, defines the philosophy of leadership and sacrifice:

“The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time. The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.”

Passing Out Parade (POP)

The **Passing Out Parade** is a prestigious ceremony held twice a year, showcasing the discipline, training, and physical excellence of the graduating batch. Dignitaries, senior army officials, and proud families attend the grand celebration of future officers taking their final step from cadets to commissioned leaders.

Can Civilians Visit IMA?

IMA is not open to the general public for tours. However, during certain events like POP or with prior special permissions, visitors may be allowed inside. Photography of specific areas is also restricted. For tourists, the **Chetwode Building and IMA gate** remain popular landmarks for a respectful glimpse from outside.
